What is the Good News?
The good news is that Jesus offers those that repent forgiveness and the chance to become children of God:
Jesus said “This is my blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins and an angel said that Jesus would “save his people from their sins." (Matthew 26:28 and Matthew 1:21)
Jesus said “The kingdom of Heaven is near”. We are made “in the image of God” and Paul says that “God .. works in you to will and to act according to his good purpose” (Matthew 3:2, Genesis 1:27 and Phil 2:13)
John said “There was the true Light which, coming into the world, enlightens every man … As many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become children of God, to those who believe in His name, who were born, not of blood nor of the will of the flesh nor of the will of man, but of God. And the Word became flesh, and dwelt among us, and we saw His glory, glory as of the only begotten from the Father, full of grace and truth”. (John 1:9-14)
What else do we have to do?
We have to believe. We have to have faith.
The writer to the Hebrews says that “faith is being sure of what we hope for and certain of what we do not see.” (Hebrews 11:1) To be a Christian it is necessary to believe that good is good (and evil is evil) even when we do not see it. It is necessary to believe that repentance and forgiveness are the only effective ways to deal with sin even when they seem futile and inadequate.
Jesus said to people who had acted on their faith that their “Faith has healed you” and James later said “As the body without the spirit is dead, so faith without deeds is dead. (Mark 5:31-34, James 2:26)
Each person cannot be forced to believe – it is something an individual has to exercise from their own free will.
