What Should Church Be Like?

Fruits of the spirit

We should display the Fruit of the Spirit

Jesus promised that where the church is (where 2 or 3 gather in his name) he will be present. Therefore we will each demonstrate the fruit of the spirit of Jesus: “love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control”. (Galatians 5:22,23). In particular we will endeavour to live in love and fellowship with others, seeking to resolve any differences that may occur, and to support those in need.

We should be Spirit powered

We will use the gifts that have been given to use. Gifts of the Spirit include “prophesying, serving, teaching, encouraging, contributing to the needs of others, leadership and showing mercy”. (Romans 12:6-8) and “The message of wisdom, the message of knowledge, faith, gifts of healing, miraculous powers, prophecy, distinguishing between spirits, speaking in different kinds of tongues and the interpretation of tongues” (1 Corinthians 12:8-10)

We should be prayerful and supportive

All are encouraged to pray for the work of the church, for the community and the world, both alone, in partnerships, at meetings and through the crisis prayer partnership group. This will lead us to many valuable informal ways of encouraging and supporting others in the family (both natural and church), the community and the workplace. All are encouraged to keep confidentiality where requested.

Serving

We should serve

All that we do, both inside and outside the church community, should be in the spirit of service, following the example of Jesus who washed the feet of others. (John 13). This will involve giving of our time and energy. Also, all are encouraged to give money regularly for the work of God’s Kingdom, both at home & abroad.

We should be inclusive

Jesus ate with “tax collectors and sinners'" and came “not to call the righteous, but sinners," (Matthew 9:11,13) Jesus also said, "Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of heaven belongs to such as these." (Matthew 19:14). Therefore our activities are open to all, at whatever stage of faith and maturity; in particular all are welcome at communion.

We should make new disciples

As well as learning ourselves, we are encouraged to share the good news of Jesus with others through word and action.
